![]() Examine the list to know whether you want the Azure or SQL Server version of the data. This Microsoft sample database is a more updated version to work with SQL Server (starting with 2016) and Azure. While this isn't a common database, this database is the Mondrian Data Loader which pre-loads data for mySQL, Postgress, SQL Server, and Sybase databases. It's probably best to determine what data you find relevant and download the appropriate version. The database is segmented into three downloads:Įach one has certain tables included like badges and post history. ![]() I first found out about this through Brent Ozar's post on How to Download the StackOverflow database via BitTorrent. Since the script is simple enough, it should work on every SQL Server. There is also a sample script of how to create it. The Contoso University is an updated database to show how a schooling database would look like. It works with 2005, 2008, 2008R2, 2012 RTM, and Azure.Īnother version exists at Microsoft SQL Server Samples GitHub. The database shows how to design a SQL Server database using SQL Server 2008 and AdventureWorksDW is the data warehouse sample. AdventureWorksĪdventureWorks Cycles is another classic database representing a fictional company created and published by Microsoft. It eventually transitioned over to SQL Server. The Northwind Database works with SQL Server 20 and was originally created for demonstration purposes for Microsoft Access. Nothing like a old classic to kick off the list. Oh, and they're also great test databases to beat on for performance scenarios. Microsoft also has some official sample databases here. This collection of databases is meant to show how to properly design databases and how applications use them efficiently. It's been a while since I've done a collection post so I thought this would be perfect. ![]() What better way than to use mean, a test database? In any case, once it’s finished running, you can run a quick check by selecting some data. There are times when you need a sample database to test out a query or benchmark the database or server in general. You’ll probably see the data flash by as the script as it’s running. This will create the tables and populate them, etc. Now connect to SQLite and create a database called Northwind: sqlite3 Northwind.db So, similar to the previous example, save the SQL script available on GitHub as Northwind_Sqlite.sql. Github has a version of the Microsoft Access 2000 Northwind sample database, re-engineered for SQLite3. It was provided as a tutorial database for managing small business customers, orders, inventory, purchasing, suppliers, shipping, and employees. The Northwind database has been available for SQL Server and Microsoft Access for years. In fact, the Chinook database was created as a newer alternative to the Northwind database. You can do exactly the same thing with the Northwind database. For example, you could run the following: SELECT * FROM Artist LIMIT 10 ġ0|Billy Cobham 2. Once the script has finished running, you can verify that it created the database by selecting some data from a table. Running this script creates the database tables and populates them with data. If not, you’ll need to use the full path to the file, along with whatever you’ve called the file. This assumes that you’re in the same directory as the file, and that the file is called Chinook_Sqlite.sql. To run it from the file, use the following command. You can do this by connecting to SQLite with the following command: sqlite3 Chinook.db That’s a direct link to the script on GitHub. It’s quite a large script, so you might find it easier to run it from a file.įirst, save the Chinook_Sqlite.sql script to a folder/directory on your computer. You can install the Chinook database in SQLite by running the SQL script available on GitHub. ![]() It’s available for various DBMSs including MySQL, SQL Server, SQL Server Compact, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, and of course, SQLite. The Chinook database is available on GitHub. It represents a digital media store, including tables for artists, albums, media tracks, invoices and customers. The Chinook database was created as an alternative to the Northwind database. If you need a sample database to run some quick tests in SQLite, here are a couple of options.
